Type 1 or Type 2 Sound Level Meter?

A Type 1 sound level meter is a little more accurate than a Type 2 model. It is also more expensive. If you are using the meter exclusively for occupational noise measurements then most regulations are quite clear: Type 2 is adequate. For this reason we recommend the Type 2 model.

However, if you need to make other noise measurements, such as noise emitting from your factory into the local environment, then it might be wise to go for a Type 1 meter. See the Applications page for more notes on environmental noise measurement.

Sound Level Meter Configuration

Octave Bands	With this option fitted, the meter splits the spectrum into 11 bands to provide information about the frequency content. This option is very useful when monitoring areas with very high noise levels. The octave band measurements are used by the software to calculate the level at the ear when wearing different hearing protectors.
1/3 Octave Bands	In this case the spectrum is split into 33 bands, giving a more detailed frequency analysis. Very useful for specialist applications and to get a more detailed picture of the frequency content of machinery noise.

Insight Software

The CEL632 is a data logging meter that does not require any additional software - when plugged into a computer it acts like a memory card. You can manually copy the data to your computer or load it into a spreadsheet program using a small conversion application. However, the Insight software makes this process more convenient, links the measurements to person, place or process, and presents the results graphically.

We recommend the Insight software with the CEL632 if you are going to take advantage of the Time History store or if you have Octave or 1/3 Octave Band Filters fitted. In these cases processing the large amounts of data in a spreadsheet can be rather time consuming.
